    I meet customers from time to time who come to me for parts after having had a particularly horrible experience at another retailer. The story is normally the same; they needed a part and went to Joe bob's Parts Warehouse. Not only did they get a part that either didn't fit or didn't fix the problem, when they went back for advice or expertise, they were met with blank stares and shoulder shrugs.

     I've been in the car business since 1992. My first job was with a nationwide auto parts chain who I will not name. They believed price was king. Period. The manager I worked for told me point blank "You really don't need that much car knowledge for this". About 6 months into this job I meet the guy who manages all the stores in the area and I mentioned how easy the computerized catalog is to use. He took that time to inform as to why it was so easy and I'll repeat it verbatim here;

  

"Our philosophy is simple, we need the system to be simple enough for anybody to use. I need to be able to hire a guy off the fryer at a fast food restaurant, put him next to you on the counter for a couple hours, then set 'em loose on his own. He probably can't tell you what the part does, but he can look it up and sell it to you."

     This is common in what we call "the aftermarket", the idea that making money is as simple as selling a cheap part in volume. That kind of thinking lasts right up to the point you start looking for quality and value. I get calls on a weekly basis where a customer's problem is the part they bought from these guys. Half the time they paid more there than buying the original from me and my warranty is better!
